Sateen floats four threads over one, which puts more thread on the surface and gives the cloth its soft hand and quiet lustre. At 300 count it drapes close to the body and holds a little more warmth than the percale - the better choice from October to April, or for anyone who finds percale too crisp.
The drawback: those long floats are easier to catch. A rough heel, a cat's claw or a ring will pull a thread and leave a snag, and sateen pills a little sooner than a plain weave. It also creases less, which is the trade.
