A 300-count sateen weighs noticeably more than the percale and drapes rather than sits. It is warmer, which is the point from autumn onwards, and it has the soft lustre people mean when they say hotel sheets. Ivory is a warm off-white; pearl is a cool one.
Sateen snags. The long surface floats catch on a rough heel or a ring, and a pulled thread shows as a fine line. It also pills a little sooner than percale in the places where it rubs - under the chin, at the shoulder. Neither is a defect; both are the weave.
